Chintz

An English variation of the Sanskrit word for ‘variegated’. originally used in the 16th and 17th centuries to describe imported Indian calico, and later applied to European printed cotton fabrics. Such was chintz's popularity in England that legislation was passed in 1722 against both its importation and manufacture (the latter rescinded in 1774).
