Studio 01: Points Of Return
Mar 8, 2024 - Jul 7, 2024
A new Somerset House Studios exhibition series presenting the work of three early career visual artists, developed as part of an 18-month residency. Supported by Jerwood.

Selected by a panel of artists and industry experts including Studios resident and filmmaker Jenn Nkiru, Studio 01 takes its title from the first-ever exhibition at Somerset House Studios in 2016, which featured works by original residents.

Today's Studio 01 artists are enorê, Leila Dear and Ufuoma Essi. Titled by the exhibiting artists, Points of Return expresses their convergence around themes of memory, interconnectedness, and alternative modes of existence.

enorê’s all i can hold consists of a collection of 3D printed porcelain sculptures that draw from themes of ghosts, death and cycles; converging with the earthy medium of clay.

Dear’s installation Livingry, presents a series of paintings and sculptures that combines construction diagrams for dome dwellings with traditional techniques such as gilding and foraged pigments.

Lastly, Essi presents a new moving image work, Half Memory, a scanned Super8 film in colour. Using Toni Morrison’s The Site of Memory as a starting point, Half Memory is a languid mediation on the histories we live amongst.

The Jerwood Somerset House Studios Residencies, supported by Jerwood, offer artists studio space, a bursary, project budget and curatorial support to develop a new work.
