The city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda sits on the left bank of the greatest Andalusian river, the Guadalquivir, opposite Europe's foremost nature reserve, the Doñana National Park (Parque Nacional de Doñana). The city is located not only in a spot of extraordinary beauty, but also in a prime location for its involvement in major historical events. Sanlúcar was, for example, the main port for many maritime exploits, and was the point of departure and return for the first circumnavigation of the world. Its history is associated with explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and Juan Sebastián Elcano; the painter and printmaker Francisco de Goya y Lucientes; the Dukes of Medina Sidonia and of Montpensier; and the Spanish composer Joaquín Turina Pérez. The city is also renowned for its delicious cuisine, its unique Manzanilla wine, its natural surroundings, the cultural and religious events that take place there, and its heritage. Another of Sanlúcar de Barrameda's main assets is its inhabitants' welcoming nature.
