The Buchheim Museum building designed by the famous Olympic architect Günter Behnisch stands directly on the shore of Lake Starnberg - and is much more than just a museum:
It is an excursion destination. Wunderwelt, a feast for the senses! In addition to the Expressionists, the museum offers inspiring views of the foothills of the Alps and Buchheim's ‘Meadow Paths of Art’ - a curious collection of artefacts and works of art from all over the world. An ambitious programme of special exhibitions and events runs throughout the year at the Buchheim Museum.
Everyone knows Lothar-Günther Buchheim from the world bestseller and cinema hit 'Das Boot'. Born in Weimar in 1918, he was soon recognised as a child prodigy. During the Second World War, he travelled on submarines as a war correspondent. In the post-war years, he became a gallery owner, author and publisher. Along the way, he amassed the most important private collections of German Expressionism. Major works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde, Otto Mueller, Alexej von Jawlensky, Lovis Corinth and Max Beckmann form the prominent core.
