The Bujalance collection brings together a selection of 19th century ukiyo-e prints as well as ehon books illustrated with ukiyo-e prints, which together showcase the thematical and artistic evolution which can be observed throughout the Edo and Meiji periods. The collection contains prints reflecting most subject matters as were treated by more than 150 artists during the period, including those among the most prominent and well-known today.

Ukiyo-e, "paintings of the ephemeral world", is a genre of woodcuts produced in Japan between the 17th and 20th centuries, among which are landscape images, of plants or animals, of beautiful women and scenes of life. as well as performances and actors from the kabuki theater, and even sports such as sumo.

Ukiyo-e was virtually unknown in the West, until the late 19th century when European impressionists painters became attracted to and influenced by it. Ukiyo-e has also given rise to manga and anime.
