Ethnographic Museum in Zielona Gora-Ochla

Zielona Gora, Poland

The Ethnographic Museum in Zielona Góra-Ochla was established in 1982, but its history dates back to the 1960s. In 1960, an ethnographic department was created within the Museum of the Lubusz Land in Zielona Góra, and the collection of material artifacts of folk culture began. In 1972, the Provincial Monument Conservator's Office initiated the creation of the Folk Architecture Park in Ochla.

The first piece was relocated to the park in 1973 – a cottage from Potrzebowo, dating back to 1683. In 1976, the Folk Architecture Park in Ochla was merged with the Ethnographic Department of the Museum of the Lubusz Land, forming the Zielona Góra Ethnographic Park. Six years later, in 1982, the institution was transformed into an independent entity under the name The Ethnographic Museum in Zielona Góra, with its site in Ochla.

Today, on an area of over 13 hectares, visitors can explore buildings from several cultural regions, including Western Greater Poland, Lower Lusatia, the central Lubusz region, and Lower Silesia. The museum houses 80 architectural objects, both large and small, and nearly 10,000 artifacts, presented in permanent exhibitions and stored in its collections. These include folk costumes and textiles, folk art artifacts, and objects representing a broad spectrum of technical culture.

The museum also owns a Baroque manor house built in the 17th century in the northwestern part of Ochla (now part of Zielona Góra), which was once part of a manor farm complex. Today, the restored manor serves as the Center for European Cultures.

The Ethnographic Museum in Zielona Góra-Ochla represents a unique cultural mosaic, shaped by post-war resettlements from the Eastern Borderlands, and showcases rich and thematically diverse exhibitions.
