The Maritime Museum is located in Belém, Lisbon, in the west part of the Jerónimos Monastery. Founded in 1863 by King D. Luís I, its collection includes more than 20,000 objects, of which 2500 are assigned to the permanent exhibition, with themes ranging from the Portuguese discoveries, to the contemporary Navy, and the different themes of the Portuguese maritime activities, such as traditional Portuguese boats and merchant, fishing and recreational vessels. It is one of the most important, recognized and visited Museums in Portugal, and a cultural body of the Navy.
