Since 1979, the Projeto Portinari, with executive guidance of João Candido Portinari, has been gathering one of the most important multimedia archives on Brazilian history and culture of the twentieth century. The Projeto Portinari archive is the result of the research and inventory of almost 5,000 works and approximately 30,000 documents related to these works. These documents include: correspondences, newspaper articles, books, historical photographs, testimonials, catalogue's exhibitions and auctions and texts. An Oral History Program was also conducted, resulting in 74 testimonies, totaling 130 recorded hours. Oscar Niemeyer and Jorge Amado are among the testimonies that contributed to deepen the understanding of the life and work of Portinari and the aesthetic, artistic, cultural, social and political concerns of his generation.
