Museum activities in Türkiye were organized in 1922 under the name "Asar-ı Atika and Museums Directorate". Over time, it operated within the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Culture. In 1946, the Directorate was renamed "Eski Eserler ve Müzeler Genel Müdürlüğü". In the following process, it was renamed "The Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums of Türkiye" with the law numbered 4848, which was enacted on April 29, 2003. It continues its activities within the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums was established to reveal, protect, evaluate, and pass on the movable and immovable cultural and natural assets to future generations through scientific excavations. The General Directorate carries out museum, protection, planning, excavation and research, identification, assistance to registered buildings, restoration, maintenance, repair, exhibition and arrangement, and publication activities related to our movable and immovable cultural assets.
The Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums continues its activities related to the protection and transfer of Turkish cultural assets to the future through its provincial and central units, including the central organization, the Directorates of Monuments and Monuments, the Directorates of Cultural Heritage Conservation Regional Councils, the Directorates of Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratories, the Directorates of Museums, and the Permanent Scientific Councils.
