The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (RMG) is a public art gallery in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. It is the largest public art gallery in the Regional Municipality of Durham, exhibiting modern and contemporary Canadian art. Housed in a building designed by noted Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, the collection focuses on works by Painters Eleven, who were founded in the Oshawa studio of Painters Eleven member Alexandra Luke.
The Robert McLaughlin Gallery’s Permanent Collection consists of over 4,700 artworks that includes nationally significant works of modern Canadian abstraction, the largest holding of Painters Eleven in the world, and an expanding collection of contemporary art. The RMG produces five permanent exhibitions annually, and frequently loans works to other institutions to be included in national and international exhibitions.
A foundational gift of 37 works from the private collection of Painters Eleven member Alexandra Luke established the RMG’s Permanent Collection in 1967. The original focus on Painters Eleven and contemporary Canadian art continue to be core collecting priorities. As we grow the collection with intention, the RMG is committed to reflecting the diverse voices and contemporary issues that make up the continuing story of Canadian art, including that of our local community. Active development and maintenance of the Permanent Collection is integral to the RMG’s organizational direction, identity and wider responsibility of contributing to a thriving community.
