Wende” is a German word that means “transformation,” commonly used to describe the era
of uncertainty and possibility leading up to and following the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Headquartered in a renovated National Guard Armory in Culver City, the Wende Museum is a
cultural laboratory that pairs unparalleled collections from the Cold War era with contemporary artists, filmmakers, musicians, scholars, and others to create something new and transformative.
The Wende Museum was founded in 2002 by Justinian Jampol, a native of Los Angeles and
scholar of modern European history. Housed for more than a decade in a nearby office park, the Wende moved to its dynamic new home on a one-acre campus in November 2017.
