Founded in 1981, Shenzhen Museum is the first museum established in Shenzhen, and is honored as the National 1st-Level Museum, National Classic Red Tourism Spot and the National Social Science Popularization Base. It consists of 4 museum sites including Shenzhen Museum of History and Folk Culture, Shenzhen Museum of Ancient Art, Dongjiang River Guerrilla Command Headquarters Memorial Museum and Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall, with a total construction area of more than 60,000 square meters and more than 40,000 cultural relics in the collection. As a large-scale headquarter-division museum that serves the function of collection, protection, research, display and education, Shenzhen Museum holds more than 30 special exhibitions and nearly 200 educational events every year with an annual audience of more than 3.18 million.
Shenzhen Museum of Ancient Art opened in 1988. It is one of the eight cultural facilities built in Shenzhen in the early days of reform and opening up, as well as an important carrier and cultural palace that bears the history of Shenzhen's reform and opening up and the memory of citizens. In 2005, it was awarded as one of the ten "Shenzhen Reform and Opening up Historic Buildings".
Shenzhen Museum of History and Folk Culture opened to the public at the end of 2008. There are 5 basic displays: “Ancient Shenzhen”, “Modern Shenzhen”, “Shenzhen’s Reform and Opening Up History”, “Shenzhen Folk Culture” and "World Wildlife Specimen Exhibition", which systematically shows the development process and historical changes of the Shenzhen area from 7000 years ago to the period of reform and opening up.
The Shenzhen Reform and Opening Exhibition Hall currently has the “Great Tides Surge Along the Pearl River: 40 Years of Reform and Opening-up in Guangdong”, which comprehensively, vividly and three-dimensionally demonstrates the magnificent course and brilliant achievements of Guangdong ’s 40 years of reform and opening up.
The memorial hall of the East River Guerrilla Headquarter has a basic display of “General Ye Ting and Shenzhen”, which concentrates on General Ye Ting's military career and his indissoluble bond with Shenzhen during the Anti-Japanese War. This display also shows Shenzhen’s extreme hard and bitter history of Anti-Japanese War.
