Did prehistoric man make sketches before drawing in the caves? (2019/2019) by Fanny Le BagousseGrotte Chauvet - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Did our ancestors paint outside of caves…
A. Most likely, but the drawings in nature have disappeared or B. Definitely not
The correct answer is…
A. Most likely, but the drawings in nature have disappeared
No trace of any drawing which could be interpreted as a sketch has ever been identified. Despite the existence of completed works like those in the Chauvet Cave, we must remember that prehistoric humans lived among nature, surrounded by animals which they saw every day.
So, such naturalist works can be explained both by their sharp observation and knowledge of the animals and by the dexterity demonstrated by the artist on materials subject to decay such as tree bark, animal skin, clothing, and on rocks in the open air, exposed to erosion.
It is not hard to imagine the outdoor landscape covered in millions of drawings!
