The Distinct Style of Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral

Mexico City was built on the site of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire. At the historic heart of the city you can find The Metropolitan Cathedral, Latin America’s largest and oldest cathedral. 

Built at the northern edge of the Plaza de la Constitución, or the Zócalo, the cathedral was influenced by a mix of Mexico’s indigenous and colonial histories.

Visitors come from around the world to see the cathedral’s ornate architecture and design.

Inside the Cathedral, the massive 82-foot-tall Altar of the Kings is the oldest example of the Mexican Baroque style known as ‘Churrigueresque’. 

The cathedral complex is composed of four buildings: the cathedral, the sagrario or sacristy, the Capilla de las Animas, and the Ex curia building.    

It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico and is an active place of worship for Mexicans today.
