Look from The Inside

The title of the exhibition uses a quote from a poem by German Lukomnikov.

Every artist represented at the exhibition is a ceramist. The exposition has arranged a sort of dialog between ceramic masterpieces of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, and Egypt and pieces by contemporary artists including Nikolai Filippov, Alyona Trubikhina, Andrei Demin, Andrei Pashkov, and Vladimir Shnirman, as well as collaborative works from the ‘Special Ceramics at VDNKh’ studio and the Mouseion ceramic workshop.

Animal-pods (21st Century) by Alyona TrubihinaThe Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

Alyona Trubikhina:

“I began to draw as a child in my psychologist’s office. My first conversation about artwork was after a therapeutic massage since the masseuse’s husband was an artist ...

I had a big family with two sisters and two brothers. The entire family was delighted with my drawings and the fact that I was an artist.

My 8-year-old nephew, who is also an artist, really inspires me and supports me. He and I are the only artists in the family.

I noticed pictures for the first time when I started coming to the ‘Accessible Museum’ program sessions. The thing I like most in the Pushkin Museum is the ceilings of the Main Building.”

“ This is a very intimate, close-up view of artworks that had a ritualistic, sacred significance or served as a status indicator in ancient cultures. During the spring quarantine this year, artists from the Special Ceramics studio had virtual sessions in which the theme featured painted amphoras, Egyptian decorative ornaments, votive items, and dishes in the shape of animals. Drawings and ceramics were created based on the topics of these sessions and lectures on the art of antiquity. These works invite you to see the world with an inside view, outside the conventions of academia” – Evgeniya Kiseleva, exhibition curator.

Nikolai Filippov:

“My first time at the Pushkin Museum was a long time ago when I was a child, I'm not sure how old I was. I went there with my mom. My favorite halls were the ones with all of the ancient things: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Various artists inspire me ...

For example, last year I was inspired by ‘Dancer Posing for a Photographer (Dancer in Front of the Window)’ by Edgar Degas. Then in the workshop I made a molded vase based on it.

The biggest challenge for an artist is when an order is very, very urgent and the work needs to be rushed. Even more so when you are doing difficult pieces, such as menorahs, molded vases, or a globe vase.

But just because it is difficult doesn't mean that I won't do it. I liked our exhibition at the Pushkin Museum. It’s a shame that the museum closed for the quarantine. But I hope that it will open soon. And there will be more exhibits there.”

“These artists create without fear. They simply take a piece of paper and pencil and draw. I think that many of us know the feeling of fear we had in school when facing a blank sheet of paper, not knowing how to begin drawing. That fear is not an issue for these artists.”

“Looking to them, I also began to draw. Andrei Pashkov, Kolya Filippov, and Alyona Trubikhina draw as they are able and as they see. When I began to work at ‘Special Ceramics’, I discovered that they were not interested in intentional stylization, and perhaps that is why their works are so honest and moving” – Dima Vakulin, ‘Special Ceramics’ workshop instructor.

"I love to draw on Mondays. I love the sculpture of David by Michelangelo and paintings by Vincent van Gogh. I liked the exhibition in the Pushkin Museum a lot, I love exhibitions” — Andrei Pashkov.

“I drew many pieces in the Pushkin Museum: Greek vases, antique and Middle Age statues, actress Jeanne Samary – she was a very nice lady with flowers on her pretty dress, I drew her with a pencil and toned the background”— Andrei Pashkov.

Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts
We are all individuals, and none of us look the same. Each of us has our own signature characteristics. The museum is a field of individuality, where every person is unique in their own way. Now we find ourselves in a situation where everyone is on equal footing, as we are in the process of reassessing the value of communication and of being able to be near one another. The exhibition ‘Look from the Inside’ shows the works of wonderful artists.

“An artist is the rarest of creatures, without age, nationality, or any other characteristics. The digital version of the exhibition ‘Look from the Inside’ helps us to remember this while the museum is closed to the public” — Marina Loshak, director of the Pushkin Museum.

Vladimir`s mother, Evgeniya Shnirman:

Vladimir really loves to read, but he doesn't like to talk. He reads only out loud for someone. He remembers all the authors and all the titles of the books that we read to one another unbelievably accurately ...

His favorite activity is to draw animals. He adores walruses, and we go to the zoo every year on his birthday".

"Volodya was one of the first children to study at Tamara Lavrentieva’s studio and the Center for Curative Pedagogy. He was the oldest student in the class. He has been involved with the ‘Special Ceramics at VDNKh’ studio since 2012, and he began participating in the ‘Pushkin for All’ program in 2017. He really loves the museum’s works that depict animals" —Vladimir`s mother, Evgeniya Vilkovich.

Jug (21st Century) by Andrey DeminThe Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

Andrei`s mother, Svetlana Demina:

"When Andrei was a child, doctors considered him to be unteachable, but now his works are in exhibitions. He did not study at school, he doesn't use speech, and he doesn't read books, but his works are so unusual that people delight in them...

We are the first generation of parents in Russia who have begun to educate our special children. My son Andrei perceives the world more keenly and sensitively by immersing himself into the creative atmosphere of artists.

Andrei senses beauty and surrenders to its creative influence...

The Pushkin Museum has endless potential to impact its visitors. One of the first strong sparks for Andrei was his visit to the exhibition “Mimicry. Wim Delvoye” in the summer of 2014, and then the “Pre-Raphaelites” exhibition.

Our visits to these exhibits developed into graphic works. One of Andrei’s favorite pieces at the Pushkin is Henri Matisse’s “Nasturtiums with ‘The Dance II’ from 1912.”

At the ‘ Look from the Inside’ exhibition, works by adult artists from ‘ Special Ceramics’ are found alongside the best works by children from the Mouseion workshop. These works share the seriousness and sincerity of something that is seen for the first time.

Marina Kovalenko

artist and head of the Mouseion ceramics workshop

“Inclusive activities for children and adults with developmental challenges have been offered at the Pushkin Museum for several years, including in the ceramics studio. I can say that I do not see differences among the participants. When children are just getting familiar with the clay, their capabilities are all the same. Only one aspect is important: the child’s desire. Their level of interest always impacts the outcome” — Marina Kovalenko.
