Symbol of Aragón

The Carrasca is a strong tree, it adapts to the summer droughts  and cold winters. As a symbol of life it flourishes in April and due to her remarkable age, past and present generations are connected.

How big?

This giant reaches a hight of 16,5 meters and the diameter of the crown is 28 mwith 615 m2 of a surface area.

The ancient holm oak has survived the intensive charcoal burning that is common in this area.

A legend says..

... witches celebrated and danced around this magical tree. Today, standing in a small town of Alto Aragón, all 13 inhabitants continue to use it for celebrations. Despite its age, it is still glowing with life, maybe thanks to the magic of witches and locals?

„La Castañera“

According to locals, it produces approximately 600 kilograms of acorns, that is enough to feed their sheep during harsh winter months. Therefore, it is nicknamed as „La castañera“ – the chestnut tree.

This magical tree charmed the fans so much, it received the highest number of votes in the history of the competition; 104,264 and won the European Tree of the Year 2021
