Marinella Senatore

Senatore’s large use of music and dance underlines the sense of emancipation inherent in such disciplines and their capacity to combine individual and collective limelight.

In 2013 she founded "The School of Narrative Dance", a nomadic free school based on a system of horizontal learning and emancipation. Other activities are part of the cycle “Protest Dance”. Senatore’s work typically involves large numbers of people. Doing activities side by side is indeed for Senatore a way to assert the value of sharing and being together giving one’s best: walking, dancing, singing, making contact with the ground and touching others is in itself a strong assertion.

She was invited to participate in numerous residency programs including: Artist-in-Residence-Grant by Stiftung Kunst & Musik für Dresden, Dresda (2017); Centre International d’Accueil et d’Echanges des Récollets, Paris (2016); Viafarini DOCVA, Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan (2012); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2011); ISCP-International Studio and Curatorial Program, Brooklyn, New York (2011); FAR-Antonio Ratti Foundation, Como (2005). In 2017, the artist was awarded with the International Art Grant in Dresden, Germany including a residency program. In 2014 Senatore won the prestigious MAXXI Prize and was the recipient of the “Museum Calls Artist” commission of AMACI, the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums. In 2013 she won the Fellowship for Young Italian Artists at Castello di Rivoli, Turin. In 2011 Senatore was an Affiliated Fellow at The American Academy in Rome and a finalist for the Furla Art Award. In 2010 she won The New York Prize, the 21stBellisario Award, the Gotham Prize and the Terna Prize. In 2009 she was the recipient of Dena Foundation Fellowship. In 2011 she was one of the italian artists invited by Bice Curiger at 54thVenice Biennale «ILLUMinations».
