1. Sand

From desert dunes to a sustainable alternative to concrete.

BioSand: A Sustainable Solution

The global construction industry contributes 39% of carbon emissions. The UAE spends about $500 million annually on importing sand for construction, highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives to reduce costs and emissions.

Seeing a gap in the market, Eman Shafiq, an architect and product designer based in the UAE, set off to find a locally-sourced alternatives to concrete & natural stone, with a commitment to advancing sustainable construction practices.

And thus, Biosand was born! This sustainable alternative to concrete uses an organic composition of UAE desert sand, locally-sourced biopolymers used as binding agents, and minimal water. It stands as a promising first step towards sustainable construction materials.

2. Palm Trees

From fallen leaves to eco-friendly paper.

The Blessed Tree Project by Meera Lootah

Lootah founded the Blustery Project during her final year of college, focusing on creating paper from fallen palm leaves. The project celebrates the art of upcycling organic waste, drawing inspiration from the local tradition of using palm trees to make ropes and build houses.

First, the fallen leaves are cut, cooked with sodium carbonate for 4 hours, then washed and blended into a pulp. A mold and frame are used to shape the paper mixture, separating water from pulp.

After transferring the paper to a towel, excess water is blotted with a sponge, and the frame is carefully removed to keep the paper flat as it dries.

And voila!

Palm paper has shown great potential for diverse uses, including screen printing, watercolor painting, and home inkjet printing. Meera envisions it as a sustainable alternative to traditional paper and hopes it will inspire future generations to embrace eco-friendly practices.

3. Dates

From date seeds to innovative solid material.

Seeds of opportunity

In the UAE, nearly 108 million kilograms of date seeds go unused. Recognizing the potential of this byproduct, DATEFORM set out to transform organic waste into sustainable building materials.

DATEFORM teams up with date syrup and cake factories to collect date seed waste, turning it into eco-friendly alternatives to conventional materials like wood, concrete, and steel.

As a result of extensive testing, DATEFORM's solid surface materials can now be used to create counter tops, flooring/tiling systems, wall cladding, shelving units, furniture, and even household products like trays and more.

4. Cotton

The inconspicuous UAE plant revolutionizing sustainable textile.

The roadside hidden gem

Tasnim Tinawi's commitment to sustainability led her to seek locally sourced, eco-friendly indusrial materials. This propelled the idea for an organic stuffing material as an alternative to synthetics used in industry. Behold ‘Desert-Cotton’.

Desert-Cotton undergoes a meticulous process: screening, pressing, treating, and drying. These steps transform raw cotton buds into a durable and versatile material for manufacturing.
