Milton Ramos: Some of his works

In 1973, he designed a home for his family in Lago Sul. He created a tall building that faces away from the front of the plot. On the ground floor are the communal living and service areas that lead out to the terraces and gardens while the bedrooms are on the upper floor. The angle between the house and the front of the plot provides a parking area to front while, on the other side, there is a grassy slope which gently rises up towards the building. Access to the house is through an opening between this slope and the body of the building, giving access to the living room, where panes of glass open up into the gardens. This solution creates introverted environments, with this perception being reinforced by the materiality of the stairwell, which consists of regular-shaped openings on both the front and rear facades.

In the 1970s, the experience he had gained from a decade of working with reinforced concrete led Milton to explore the material's properties in dramatic spaces. The Soldier's Oratory (Oratório do Soldado) and the Federal District's Institute of History and Geography (1970 and 1972 respectively) are examples of him relating technical boldness with the environment, producing spaces that surprise the visitor as they wander through them.

Milton designed residential buildings for various Superquadras (huge housing estates) in the city. The R2 and R3 block design marks a significant moment in Milton Ramos' professional career as it was an opportunity to explore the possibilities offered by prefabricated concrete. The R2 Blocks can be found in various Superquadras in the Asa Sul district and they illustrate how seriality does not imply monotonous repetition. In the case of the partially built RE apartment blocks in the northern part of the city, Milton was also commissioned to urbanize blocks 407 and 408 and build the local classroom schools.
