University Circle
CIA is in University Circle, a neighborhood less than 5 miles from downtown Cleveland that includes the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Orchestra and moCa Cleveland. It was voted best arts district in the country in the 2021 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice contest!

CIA was chartered in 1882 as the Western Reserve School of Design for Women. The school’s first name reflects the forward-thinking views of founder Sarah Kimball, who opened her home for the first class meetings. Open to male and female students alike, the Cleveland School of Art, as the school became known, blossomed under the influence of a dedicated and talented faculty, whose prize-winning art and award-winning commercial designs are known collectively as “the Cleveland School.”
In 1949, the school became officially known as the Cleveland Institute of Art, and in 1981, the College purchased a former Ford assembly plant, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (The plant was the first Model T plant outside of Detroit.) In 2015, CIA completed an 80,000-square-foot expansion that houses academic spaces and administrative offices.

CIA students on campus
Today, CIA has about 600 students from across the country and the world who learn to nurture their creativity and think critically about their difference-making work. All of them—100 percent—gain real-world experience while studying at CIA.

At CIA, there are no large lecture halls—only small classrooms and individual studio spaces that allow faculty to mentor students and demonstrate techniques. Our light-filled studios were designed to inspire and encourage collaboration. CIA's student-to-faculty ratio is 10:1.

Faculty
CIA faculty teach from experience and success. As artists and designers, their work is recognized nationally and internationally— like Illustration faculty member (and CIA alum) James Groman's award-winning series of vinyl toys in the DC Collectibles’ Artist Alley collection.

CIA's Reinberger Gallery supports the creative work of professional artists by providing quality exhibition opportunities. It also serves CIA students, faculty and the community as an educational resource, and particularly to encourage artistic growth and experimentation through well-presented exhibitions, events and lectures.
One of CIA's most honored traditions is the annual Student Independent Exhibition. From choosing the jurors to mounting the show, students organize every aspect of SIE, which always offers fresh (and sometimes surprising) approaches to contemporary art.
Visiting Artists
CIA’s Visiting Artist program and Lunch on Fridays lecture series link CIA students to the larger artistic community. In February 2020, New York City-based duo FlucT performed at CIA.

Community partnerships
CIA believes in the value of direct experience and community partnerships. Our commitment to this ensures every student works on real projects with external partners or clients. Faculty recently partnered with Cavs Legion GC, the NBA 2K League team of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

CIA Alumni: Marc Brown
Another CIA alum is Marc Brown, the illustrator and author who created the Arthur Adventure book series and Arthur television series on PBS. His work—and that of other CIA alumni—changes the way we look at the world.

CIA Alumni: Dana Schutz
Together, students and alumni form an extensive network of creative professionals within the CIA orbit. New York City-based painter Dana Schutz, a 2000 CIA graduate, conducted studio visits with CIA students before speaking at Commencement in 2019.
Cinematheque
CIA is also home to the famed Cinematheque, which The New York Times considers one of the country's best repertory movie theaters. Founded in 1986, the alternative film theater shows classic, foreign and independent films. Screenings take place in CIA's Peter B. Lewis Theater.
