"She was very bright, she had that extraordinary eye and extraordinary curiosity, she wasn't superficial. She was charming looking but she wasn't a beauty. She had a good figure and dressed well, she always looked attractive" remembered Babs Simpson.

But her great passion from a young age was the art of creating gardens. She practised it throughout her lifetime, leading her to assemble an extensive library which is now part of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation.
She worked above all for family and friends, with her best known designs being the two White House gardens: the Rose Garden and the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.

The passion for gardens and flowers, shared by both, is the reason why Balenciaga sends Mrs. Mellon postcards while enjoying a few days of leisure in Gerona, especially at Cap Roig, surrounded by the marvellous gardens created by Mr. and Mrs. Woevodsky.

This special relationship of lasting friendship prompted Mrs. Mellon to describe the last time she saw Balenciaga in his atelier:
The night before he closed his shop in Paris, I sat with him in the late afternoon in his third floor atelier. Always aware of the details, he said "the shoulders of your dress need adjustment. Leave it to me tonight and I will send it to you tomorrow".

One of the fundamental pieces of this collection is the album containing all of the sketches which Mrs. Mellon kept and had bound with a title and an emotion that connected her to Balenciaga in their shared search for beauty and elegance: I Feel Pretty.
This exhibition is part of the show held in 2017 at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa (Getaria) under the artistic direction of Hubert de Givenchy and curated by Igor Uria.
