FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY NEXT

The exhibition offered an exciting glimpse into the wealth of contemporary practices in fashion photography which result in a dynamic, colourful and multi-faceted display.

Explaining the concept behind the show curator Magdalene Keaney said, “If someone tells you not to stop it means you must be doing something good to begin with! The title of this exhibition is intended as a clarion call.” Featuring photographers who push the boundaries of fashion photography and who are developing new and radical ways to progress their art, this exhibition brings together the industry’s most exciting and maverick talent.

Presented in two parts, part 1 took on the themes of Materiality and Play, drawing attention to a new generation of photographers returning to analogue processes and technology and employing irony and humour to highlight possible tensions between ‘virtual’ and ‘real’.

Part 2 focused on two of the most prevalent approaches in contemporary fashion photography – Artifice and Authenticity. Keeping central to the idea of contrast between the two positions, it simultaneously acknowledges that divisions of ‘fantasy’ and ‘fact’ are often not simplistic or clear-cut in contemporary practice.
