Who is Arts Council England?
Arts Council England is the national development agency for creativity and culture. It supports the creative lives of young people in school, at home and in their social lives.
What is 'The Way I See It' Project?
The Way I See It project was created in the first few months of the pandemic in 2020 when Google Arts & Culture and Arts Council England came together to showcase the art made by young people in England as they use their creativity to make sense of the world around them.
Flowers in Spots My Idea in Lockdown (2020-08-01) by EllaArts Council England
Being creative helps children express themselves and develops their skills and confidence. When lockdown began, the rainbows that started appearing in windows were just one of many signals that children wanted to be heard and were very capable of responding to current issues in a creative way.
Meanwhile, we witnessed a burst of activity from arts organisations that produce work for, by or with children and young people to bring their work online. Many Arts Council-supported organisations published free downloadable resources for children and their families in support of lockdown learning.
Young People Creating Art (2020-09-23) by BALTIC Centre for Contemporary ArtArts Council England
For some children and young people, being away from school meant no access to basic art materials. Working in collaboration with Bridge organisations, local charities, community groups and local authorities, Arts Council distributed over 44,960 Let's Create Packs to children. Across the country kitchen tables, living rooms floors and garden paths were deployed as spaces to facilitate creativity.
Clay Charms (2020-06-09) by SerenArts Council England
We were inspired by the Kirkleatham Museum, who worked in partnership with Tees Valley Museums and local schools during lockdown to produce an online gallery filled with thoughtful entries on the theme of kindness from pupils of all ages.
Museum staff were so overwhelmed with the response and the number of submissions, they had to create a second gallery. The full collection can be found here: Museum of Kindness.
Run Free (2020-05-01) by Lily and FreddieArts Council England
From online choirs to pavement chalk, people found joy in creativity during lockdown. There was a need to connect with each other and all kinds of creative ways to do it. Creative activities can play an important role in helping young people deal with anxiety, stress and social isolation.
Creating the collection
To develop the collection Arts Council partnered with five organisations to ensure we could reach as many young people as possible. Our partners created stories for this collection to interpret their contributions to the project.

Happiness (2020-09-05) by KikaArts Council England
Thanks to Google Arts & Culture and our partner organisations, this project allowed the work of children and young people to reach a global audience whilst the events, performances and displays that would normally provide a platform for their creativity were cancelled. We hope that it can continue to inspire and to live on as a snapshot of that remarkable summer.
So, get inspired and Let’s Create.
