Some films took the genre in new directions, openly questioning the spirit of the mythic West while wrestling with contemporary politics disguised in turn-of-the-century dressings. Others made the case for the enduring relevance of the Western and its traditions, especially at times of change. The Western remained as rich and exciting as at any time in its history.
