20 Years of Change

Lucinda Compton first came to Newby Hall when her husband Richard brought her to his family home in Yorkshire

Robin Compton lived at Newby Hall between 1977 and 2009 during which time he and his wife Jane restored the gardens and opened them to the public, adapting them for visitors and adding both the miniature railway and the Adventure Gardens now enjoyed by thousands of children.

As Curator of the Gardens, Lucinda Compton has learned to be passionate about gardening and has overseen change and development in the gardens over 20 years

The double herbaceous border has been replanted and reinvigorated during Richard and Lucinda Compton's time at Newby Hall

The Historic Orchards are home to 50 different varieties of apples, many old, rare and some found nowhere else in the North of England. Each year September ends with an apple throwing contest for visitors.

New gardens include Robin's Walk which once featured red, white and bi-coloured roses but is now cherished for the vibrancy of its blue and yellow borders.

The two Shell Pavilions at the end of the Double Borders were completed in 2017.  Here Lucinda Compton talks to shell designer, Linda Fenwick.

The Newby Hall borders were replanted in between 2013 and 2015. A new, modern colour palette blends soft pastels with vibrant lilac, magenta, lime, claret and silver. A wonderful haven for bees, butterflies and dragonflies, the borders are worth more than one visit each season. 

Springtime heralds a profusion of primulas in the Water Garden at Newby Hall, as colourful as a sweet shop.

The magnolia walk is at its most magnificent in Spring.
