Even though the climate in the region is semi-arid, the Sintra Mountains are considered moderately humid: precipitation in the mountains is higher than in the surrounding areas. Its micro-climate developed full of dense foliage with a rich botanical diversity

In the coast, archaeological remnants indicate one of the oldest human presences in Europe.
The beaches in this region are so famous that Ericeira was classified as a World Surf Reserve by the Save The Waves Coalition.

Besides the beach, Mafra can be proud of having one of the most iconic palaces of the country. The Mafra National Palace occupies an area of nearly four hectares (37,790 m2), comprising 1200 divisions, more than 4700 doors and windows, 156 staircases and 29 courtyards and lobbies

The city was the most important center of Portugal's fishing industry In the beginning of the 20th century, particularly specializing in processing and exporting sardines.

Now, however, the production of salt is something that keeps the economy running.

The city is famous for its choco frito, fried cuttlefish, which can be found in several restaurants in the city.

The best place to get them though is close to the Rotunda das Sardinhas, where you can be friends with a statue of the mollusc.
