Describing himself as a ‘self-taught conceptual artist’, Jeremy Deller has alternatively been an assembler of things and a ‘stager’ of events, orchestrating, curating and directing projects that include processions, historical re-enactments, demonstrations, films and exhibitions.

This mid-career survey provided a fresh overview of Deller’s multi-faceted work.

The exhibition featured almost all of his major works since the early 1990s, including installations, photographs, videos, posters, banners, performance works and sound pieces.

In 2009, working in collaboration with local groups and societies, Deller created a procession for Manchester’s
International Festival. One of the floats presented a life-size reconstruction of Valerie’s Snack Bar from Bury Market, which Deller characterised as being like ‘an OAP youth
club’. It was redisplayed in this exhibition, together with some of the original processional banners designed by Ed Hall.

The exhibition extended beyond the gallery too, with banners that adorned its concrete facade.
