The golden throne was the symbol of feudal dynastic power. At council meetings, the emperor sat solemnly on the throne. The officers and generals gathered and lined up by rank, stood by in the Dai Trieu Nghi yard, facing the throne.

The Nguyen Dynasty throne was located in Thai Hoa Palace, where council meetings hosted by the emperor happened twice a month, specifically on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. This was also the place where important court ceremonies were held for both internal and external affairs. Only the Top Four Officers and the royalties were allowed to enter Thai Hoa Palace.

The golden throne in Hue Imperial Palace belongs to the Nguyen Dynasty. Nguyen was the last dynasty in the history of Vietnam's monarchy, and lasted for 143 years (1802-1945) and ended with 13 emperors. The Nguyen Dynasty was established when Emperor Gia Long (Nguyen Anh) was crowned in 1802, ending with the abdication of Emperor Bao Dai in 1945.

The golden throne of the Nguyen Dynasty is 101cm high, 72cm wide and 87cm long. The base of the throne is 118cm long, 90cm wide and 20cm high. Above the throne is the gold plated canopy, carved with a sophisticated dragon figure. The Nguyen Dynasty's golden throne was recognized as Vietnam National Treasure in 2015.

The throne was created by the most outstanding artisans from the team of professional craftsmen, making royal and imperial objects.

From July 19 to December 2, 1883, the throne was transferred from emperor Tu Duc, to Duc Duc, and then to Hiep Hoa Kien Phuc.

Above the throne is a gorgeous gold plated canopy, all wooden, decorated with 9 magnificent golden dragon figures, which embody happiness, longevity and luck.

Adjustment were made to the golden throne under Khai Dinh emperor era. When repairing Thai Hoa Palace, the emperor had the canopy remade, changing it from silk and brocade material to all wood.

Throughout its existence, the golden throne in Thai Hoa Palace witnessed many major historical events of the Nguyen Dynasty.
