Lady Lighting a Lamp

Take a journey through Abdur Rahman Chugtai's famed painting

Lady Lighting a LampSalar Jung Museum

Chughtai was known for his delicate but clear and continuous lines, and wash technique.

The painting shows a woman in flowing robes, lighting a lamp at sundown.

The lamp is ornate with a long chain attached.

In her left hand she is holding the burning lamp supported by her right hand above the candle stick.

The wisps of smoke from the lamp can be seen rising up.

Using the water colour, tempera technique, Chughtai has drenched the entire painting in the warm orange hues of the setting sun.

The painting is framed by a golden border on the upper...

...and lower ends.

Floral plants in red, light green and grey are painting against the stained marble margin.
