Desenho no Foyer (2023) by Beatriz SauaiaESPM | O Inusitado em Constante Movimento
Drawing at the Foyer
Theatro Municipal is one of the main theaters in Brazil, known for its ballet, opera, and classical music performances. Despite being a public facility, due to the cultural programming it presents and its luxurious building, it is considered a space for the elite. The Drawing Workshops are a self-learning drawing research project that breaks this paradigm, attracting participants of all ages and social classes.

Observation drawing session in the Theater foyer
The Workshops are monthly immersive observation drawing events that have taken place since December 2021. In each edition, participants move around the site while making sketches of the Theater environments or a model wearing opera or ballet costumes.
Space for reflection
The Workshops are experimentation spaces where everyone can draw whatever they want. After observing the results, everyone talks and exchanges tips or information about their processes. There are no classes, assessments, or quantitative measurements – instead, there is meaningful learning, reflection, and smiles.
Sketches are quickly-made drawings that look natural, without erasing at all; mistakes are assumed as part of the process. They are like visual notes.

Drawing is capturing the world with your eyes
The Drawing Workshops may seem to be an artistic activity with no immediately perceptible utility. Nonetheless, academic research does not only lead to useful, professional knowledge that is applicable to immediate practical demands. Participants develop drawing skills and, in parallel, skills and abilities that are important for all activities in their lives, such as creativity.
