Origin Story

From 1965-2024, the Gemini Giant stoodĀ outside the Launching Pad restaurantĀ in Wilmington.

The statue is one of the many ā€œMuffler Menā€ along Route 66. It was named after Project Gemini, NASA’s second human spaceflight program that ran from 1961 to 1966. In 2024, the Joliet Area Historical Museum acquired the Gemini Giant with the goal of preserving it. On March 20, 2024, crews lifted the giant off its pedestal and moved it to safe storage. Months later, it was installed at its new home alongside a Route 66 monument in Wilmington’s South Island Park.
