Great Composition A with Black, Red, Gray and Blue by Piet Mondrian

1919-1920

Grande composizione A con nero, rosso, grigio, giallo e blu (1919 - 1920) by Piet MondrianLa Galleria Nazionale

Created by Piet Mondrian between 1919 and 1920 after he moved to Paris and with an approach to Cubist decomposition theories, the work of art constitutes the point of passage to abstractionism and belongs in particular to the first phase of the Neoplastic period.

In fact, it is the first work of Neoplastic art created by Piet Mondrian.

The work concentrates on primary colors, which later develop into more complex structures.

The shape returns to true primary straight lines (horizontal and vertical) and fundamental colors, reaching balance through a rigorous calculation of relationships:

for this work, balance and relationships have always been foundations of beauty.

Acquired from the New York National Gallery, it is the only work of art by the Dutch artist to be present in the collection of an Italian museum.
