Ibibio: A Riverine Tongue
The Ibibio language thrives in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, Nigeria. Its rich history and unique characteristics make it a fascinating subject of study.
Ibibio belongs to the Ibibio-Efik dialect cluster of Cross River languages. Sometimes when we say "Ibibio", we mean the whole cluster.
In pre-colonial times, speakers of Ibibio used a logographic writing system called “Nsibidi” to write the language. It was a language used for ritual signification and artistry and was intelligible to a small sect of people. There are a number of modern interventions to revitalize the script for modern popular use.

Ibibio's Global Impact
The Ibibio language's influence extends beyond Nigeria. Transatlantic slavery spread Ibibio words, like "buckra" (from "mbakara"), into Afro-American vernaculars.
