The Shrine of Remembrance hosts more than 150 official commemorative services each year. The majority of these services occur in the Sanctuary, on the Forecourt, or at a Remembrance Tree and its attendant memorial plaque. They are held to remember the service of Australian men and women, particularly Victorians, in times of war and peace.

Five Light Horse guidons were presented to the Shrine in August 2005 by the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment, the sole remaining Light Horse Regiment in Victoria. A guidon is a swallow-tailed flag carried by light horse and cavalry units.

Shrine Guard (2007)Shrine of Remembrance
Since 1935 the Shrine Guard has carried the responsibility of guarding the Shrine on behalf of generations of Victorians. The Shrine Guard proudly wear the uniforms of the Light Horse Infantry.

There are over 200 trees dedicated as memorials to specific service units on the Shrine Reserve. Many veterans associations conduct their annual pilgrimage and service at their dedicated tree.

The Eternal Flame, Anzac Day Dawn Service (2013)Shrine of Remembrance
The Eternal Flame was lit by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 February 1954. Representing eternal life, the flame has never been extinguished.
Sanctuary and AmbulatoryShrine of Remembrance
The Sanctuary is considered to be the heart of the Shrine. At the centre of the Sanctuary is the Stone of Remembrance. Bearing the inscription GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN, at 11 am on Remembrance Day a ray of light falls upon the word love. This marks the commencement of one minute’s silence.
