The Gianfranco Ferré Research Center, Digital Innovation for Creative and Cultural Industries, was established in December 2021 by the Politecnico di Milano following the donation of the archive and the historic headquarters of the Foundation by the Ferré family.

The Archive has been recognized as being “of particular cultural interest” by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, Lombardy Archival Superintendency (2014), and preserves the documentary heritage produced from 1978 (the founding of Gianfranco Ferré Company) to 2007.

3,500 items, comprising garments, accessories, and bijoux, 22,000 technical and fashion show drawings, 250 patterns, 40,000 photographs, videos, and promotional materials, as well as 1,500 bound volumes of fashion magazines, digitized and entered into a database

The Research Center aims to investigate and experiment with advanced techniques for the visualization and enjoyment of artifacts with high cultural value, typical of the creative and cultural industries that represent a distinctive element of Italian cultural identity.

The archive is explored, on the one hand, as cultural capital aimed at the preservation and documentation of historical memory through the design of new models of enjoyment and narrative formats to develop unprecedented research trajectories.

On the other hand, the exploration of the archive garment initiates the research, followed by a process of Reverse Engineering and advanced digitization with the aim of recreating the entire design process and understanding the creative logic of Gianfranco Ferré.

The Research Center aims to promote fashion culture through the enhancement of the archive and the design of exhibitions and events that experiment with models of interaction for diverse audiences with the tangible and intangible heritage of Gianfranco Ferré.

The archive is thus transformed into an augmented archive, where every 'real' component is enriched with virtual insights and detailed information, broadening the context of the exhibition and enhancing user engagement through interactive and intertextual experiences.

The activities of cultural dissemination and enhancement include the design of publications aimed at increasing the recognition and visibility of the archive, as well as the use of the Tortona 37 headquarters for guided tours, research activities, and educational training.

Among the Research Center’s publications: Gianfranco Ferré. Design Principles, which explores Ferré's unique approach to design, and Gianfranco Ferré Within the Lens, which celebrates collaborations with renowned fashion photographers in advertising campaigns.
