Visual arts
Implicitly or explicitly, an artist usually makes it very clear how he or she sees the world. In the case of the Paranaense Geraldo Leão, his works imply the possibility of a Utopian world in which there is no imposition, where nothing is determined, and where the possibility of change always exists. The unique way he handles his materials, combining them into an almost-intuitive mixture of acrylic resin and pigments, results in a peculiar and not always premeditated outcome. Thereby, he shows respect, accepting that they behave according to their nature. It makes his work mean much more than just materials applied on a surface. The act of painting his canvasses horizon-tally allows the emergence of a distinctive calligraphy, mediated by him, but free and unique. According to the artist himself, this would be the great metaphor about life. For the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, this important exhibition of the most recent works of Geraldo Leão becomes even greater thanks to the artist’s generosity in inviting some of his former students to share the same space. Here, they represent all the others in a long journey of more than 20 years of schooling. Teachers and former students— great artists now—side by side, in a continuous dialog process.
