WONDERWALLS: SHINING THE SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN STREET ARTISTS
The Women’s Forum Street Art Project shows how much we’re missing if we believe street art to be the exclusive province of men. Ten women street artists from around the globe take part and contribute artwork on theme "She's a Leader”.
Meet the women behind the walls...
"KASHINK is one of the few very active female artists in the French graffiti/street art scene.
She lives in Paris, France, and has travelled a lot throughout the world, getting inspiration from many different cultures. Her work is based on the celebration of humanity's diversity.
She paints huge four eyed characters, with thick lines, vivid colors, in a very distinctive style.
KASHINK is a surprising person: as most female painters represent female figures, she only paints men, preferably fat and hairy.
She's provocative, creative, constantly challenging. She wears a mustache as part of her daily make up.
Artistically speaking, her big inspirations are very diverse, such as Leigh Bowery, Gilbert and George, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo or Fernando Botero.
Her work has been shown in galleries in many European countries as well as in Canada and the USA.
In 2013 she was part of « Women on the walls », a show curated by Jeffrey Deitch in Miami during Art Basel. She'as been also working on her project « 50 cakes of gay » in support of equal rights, painting more than 250 gay wedding cakes in 9 different countries. KASHINK was also invited for a lecture at La Sorbonne University about women and gender representation in street art.
In 2014 she has painted huge murals and shown her work in Montréal, New York, Paris, and Miami again.
The Huffington Post named her as first in a list of « 10 women street artists who are better than Banksy » in september 2014."
"“I've always been willing to share my art with people, and I love the feeling of being part of the life of a neighborhood here and there. I always imagine how people would react when they'll see it, some might not like it, some might relate to it. When I paint in Paris, I often meet people who have seen other pieces around, and it's a great feeling to get positive feedback from them. I think street art is a good way to share a message as well, and this part is important for me.”"
