《Heterotopia—Common spaces unseen》

Heterotopia means the spaces where people and objects overlap or are located in different ways. In addition, it refers to another name of enjoyment and creation which mirrors familiar worlds (Homotopia) maintained with unified order and system. The second thematic exhibition of ACT Center 《Heterotopia—Common spaces unseen》has the theme of unfamiliar spaces which exist in reality, but which are different from reality.

1. SHOWCASE

ACT Festival comprises a showcase, performance, forum, artist, talk, workshop, and ACC Creation exhibition. As for showcase programs, 9 teams of ACT Center 2016 participated in invitation show case.

Kinetic Media Lab / node 5:5 [prototype]Asia Culture Center (ACC)

Kinetic Media Lab / node 5:5 [prototype]

<node 5:5 [prototype]> is an audiovisual installation consisting of video projection, kinetic laser module, and wave field synthesis.

(Exhibition video) Kinetic Media Lab / node 5:5 [prototype]Asia Culture Center (ACC)

10 kinetic laser module systems head for screens at a right angle direction. Each laser shines on the screens with strong red light synthesizing embodied images. The orbit in which the laser light heads overlap and intertwine with video images, creates dynamic space shapes with sound, which sends signals to make each equipment to work simultaneously through timeline for each connecting equipment.

Mixed Reality LabAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Mixed Reality Lab

Mixed Reality Lab’s project is made to provide experience digital tangible cultural asset possessed by Asia Culture Institute through virtual reality.

(Exhibition video) Mixed Reality LabAsia Culture Center (ACC)

The work was created based on the idea that there are still limits in tactual space and the experience of feeling by body even though visual reality and degree of immersion of virtual reality increased with the development of HMD and computing technology. This work is meaningful especially in that it established a virtual reality platform with public interest by realizing the purpose of ACC.

Media Surface Lab / Walking the forest of ritual instrumentsAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Media Surface Lab / Walking the forest of ritual instruments

<walking the forest of ritual instruments> started from imagining what it would it be like if passively made memories are selectively deleted and regenerated. The work is processed to make sure that audience can forget albeit briefly when they face installations. Washing equipment which selectively erases passively made memories and regenerates them resembles a ritual.

The artist induces the audience to enter the concept of the work by experiencing factors installed in many parts of the exhibition hall. The work drags out immersion and participation of auditory, visual, tactile senses of the audience. When the audience enter the exhibition hall by pushing their way through color, light, and tactile installations in the entrance into the hall, large brushes of washing machine stimulate senses of the audience. This makes the audience experience temporary confusion as it is distorted and expanded through mirrors placed in many parts of the space.

Media Surface Lab / Emoji CenterAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Media Surface Lab / Emoji Center

This work is made to show that emoji (emotional pictorial symbol) characters exist as an entity. The artists move emojis into reality and the audience meets  and sees the emojis in person and understand them better.

(Exhibition video) Media Surface Lab / Emoji CenterAsia Culture Center (ACC)

The emoji character set is expanded into a communication tool, almost making it into a language based on grammar and syntax rule. The work explores emotional expressions expressed through today’s technologies by making the audience who are used to emojis to use new expression methods of emojis in a digital communication platform. 1,369 individual characters are the starting point for our real emotions to be erased and digital emotions to become the norm with the audience adopting their own emojis in the digital world.

Open Lab / Culture map GAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Open Lab / Culture map G

<culture map g> is an application which discovers open culture spaces existing in Gwangju and connects people of various areas who gather there centering on the spaces. The application is designed to connect people to people, space to space, and community to community to ensure that each culture and thinking are respected and shared.

(Making video) Open Lab / StoryboxAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Like the slogan of Storybox, “Culture has no walls", the gap between those who provide culture and those who try to enjoy the culture is narrowed and a new form of community is created.

Open Lab / Mug LaeyaAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Open Lab / Mug Laeya

<mug laeya> is made up word created by combining ‘mug’ from a 'mug cup' and 'Laeya' from 'myot-ie-gue-laeya' which means ‘what should it be like?’ in the local dialect of Korean.

Open Lab / Mug LaeyaAsia Culture Center (ACC)

10 artists selected represent the contents of Gwangju such as May 18 Democratic Movement and Mt. Mudeung, meaning of royal azalea, and penguin village of Yangrim-dong which can represent Gwangju, and made them into the work.

Open Lab / Public Art Lab Zebra (2016) by Seongchan Kim, Misun Lee, Seonghee LeeAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Open Lab / Public Art Lab Zebra

The <public art lab zebra> project discusses the variety of culture through creative music played as live music and spatial emotion in container boxes. The internal space of the container box becomes the stage space, and patterns which can match any place are applied to external space.

Open Lab / The Storytelling MachineAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Open Lab / The Storytelling Machine

<the storytelling machine> is an interactive media piece of art for audiences of all ages. This work randomly arranges images and texts created by the public.

(Exhibition video) Open Lab / The Storytelling MachineAsia Culture Center (ACC)

This project is connected to a workshop that happened in Gwangju, Korea and Melbourne, Australia. During the workshop, hundreds of people participated in writing and drawing pictures, and <the storytelling machine> shows texts and images they create. The machine selects and designates new animation status in real time, and creates a big story by randomly collecting texts and images. This work underscores relationship between people and the environment in which they live and the influence of digital platform on contemporary storytelling.

Late SpeculationAsia Culture Center (ACC)

2. PERFORMANCE

Performance displayed art and technology expanded through 10 teams of wearable technology performance, and audiovisual performance.

Late SpeculationAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Late Speculation

<late speculation> which combines geometric illustrations is a work of co-production by Takami Nakamoto who conducts space and sound works and Noemi Schipfer who creates kinetic works. Work factors which visualize wide musical panorama and brief choreography fascinate audience as they are projected to the surface and made into multilayers of a triangle structure on a stage.

LjósAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Ljós

<ljós> (‘Light’ in Icelandic) is a live media performance produced by Fuse* studio which researches relationships between light, space, sound, and movement in the digital performing art area. Dance performer Elena Annovi is located in the center of the theater, and enters the surreal dream space through image and sound where the audience responds in real time and interacts.

New PerformanceAsia Culture Center (ACC)

New Performance

<new performance> shows an AR real time performance with 4 choreographers. All choreographers have markers on their wrists. The performance captures the stage with a video camera, synthesizes AR image, and displays it in the stage background through a projector.

MetamorphAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Metamorph

<metamorph> shows the process in which the face of “Kate”, 3D character provided by “Poser pro” changes through sound. The sound is controlled by irregularly random signals and dissembles the face of “Kate” into dots, lines, and textured surfaces. The dissembled face of “Kate” is neither a man nor a woman. As the face is repeatedly dissembled and assembled through sound, it continually changes into different faces. In this process, uncanniness occurs, the uncanny emotion is the purpose of the sound itself.

SOMAPHONYAsia Culture Center (ACC)

SOMAPHONY

<somaphony> is an audiovisual performance produced by Antoni Rayzhekov, and performed by Katharina Köller. <somaphony> is composed of autogenous electronic objects that respond to stimuli and biofeedback wearable controllers. As it is connected with heart pulse, muscle tense, and movement of performers, real-time audiovisual visual composition is possible. The artist explores interdependence between digital equipment and performers that express behavior and cybernetic (artificial brain) relationship through this project.

Sombra (2016) by Takami NakamotoAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Sombra

<sombra> is the result of cooperation between Takami Nakamoto and Mexico studio and it is based on digital art and interactive design. On the performance stage, live music of Takami strikes a balance with light projection, and generation effect of shadow for a show of strong atmosphere.

ALPHAAsia Culture Center (ACC)

ALPHA

Julien Bayle made the system of the work to ensure that continuous impromptu performance is possible on the stage. The system sophisticatedly designed for <alpha> creates visual image which can be integrated and changed in real time without previously recored/filmed. In addition, constant analysis of sound creates shapes and already made shapes also changes, which leads to crossing of geometric description of scenes.

Intensional ParticleAsia Culture Center (ACC)

Intensional Particle

The performance starts as a horizontal line projected on the screen tremors. The line drastically multiplies as if to discharge its energy. Similarly, when Umeda on stage trembles, the covert energy withheld in his body is transmitted from the pelvis to the spine, to the arms, and lastly to the digital screen situated at the rear, in which the energy is visualized by curved lines reminiscent of a solar corona.

FIELDAsia Culture Center (ACC)

FIELD

<field> is inspired by the principle that sounds can be generated from the electromagnetic fields omnipresent in the environment. In this performance, residual electric signals, imperceptible to the eyes and ears, are picked up by electromagnetic transducer microphones and become the materials of the work. The sound and light composition emerges through a continuous movement of plugging and unplugging between the panels. And through <field>performance, objects and body which are composition factors of the work are changed into unsubstantial and floating power that can be hardly heard.
