Ashiyagama no Sato
Ashiyagama from this area are reputed to be masterpieces among tea kettles.
Used in tea ceremonies, many have regretted the cessation of their production. Production of Ashiyagama once employed numerous citizens. “Ashiyagama no Sato” opened its doors on May, 1995. As one strolls through the buildings of “Ashiyagama no Sato,” they discover the world of the tea ceremony and traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Ashiyagama
Ashiyagama are cast iron kettles made in Ashigama, and used in tea ceremonies. The date of the first production is obscure, but some fine works of art had already been created in the Nanbokucho period (the middle in the 14th century). It is assumed that their production ceased sometime around the early Edo period. (the beginning of the 17th century). Due to their high quality and elegance, Ashiyagamas were particularly favoured by people practicing tea ceremony as well as by aristocrats, who both held them in high esteem. Retaining their great value, today, eight out of these nine kettles have been designated as important cultural properties.
Notable Aspects of the Ashiyagama
First of all, the Ashiyagama has a characteristic shape. It is known as a “shinnari,” for boiling water, and harmonizes well with the atmosphere of the tea ceremony. There is an elegant pattern embedded in the lower part of the Ashiyagama. Also, the kettle lugs or handles merit attention as they are made to represent ogre’s faces. Ashiyagamas are thin and light as well.
