Casa Do Design Matosinhos

Burilada, Casa do Design's inaugural exhibition, had design objects on display that are agents of reconfiguration of the culture heritage in contemporary Portugal. It sought to relate design and its arts and crafts dimension, by recovering artifacts, folklore, practices and identities.

Almanaque presented the history of graphic design, illustration and printing in Portugal. Consisting of magazines from José Bártolo’s collection, Almanaque depicted around 150 years of ideas, aesthetic currents and technological transformations evident in graphic design in Portugal.

Discos Orfeu presented the legendary Orfeu record label, created in 1956, in Porto, by Arnaldo Trindade. The first major exhibition dedicated to this record label, it displayed countless record covers and documentary material by some of the greatest Portuguese designers of the 20^th century.

A documentary exhibition on the use of graphic design towards the promotion of an 'Imaginary Portugal', an ideal created by the Estado Novo's nationalist propaganda and whose imagery was used in posters, brochures, magazines, books and popular art objects.

Imprimere - Art and Process in the 250 years of the National Press: Documentary exhibition that brought together instruments, machinery, technologies and artifacts illustrating the history of print production in Portugal. Imprimere sought to convey a didactic perspective on the graphics, techniques and technologies involved in book production.

An exhibition gathered the estate of the multifaceted artist, illustrator, comedian and poet António dos Santos, a.k.a. Tóssan, someone who only wanted to discover his own identity. The exhibition displays Tóssan’s drawings, caricatures and documentation reflecting the artist's creative process.

SIGNAL - 100 Years of Design in Portuguese Telecommunications and Mail, showed the evolution of aesthetic trends, technical resources, political and economic changes in Portugal over the last 100 years, revealing the connection between design and the transformations of telecommunications and mail in the country.

Part of the 1^st Porto Design Biennale, Frontiere presented stories of designers who sought to react to contemporary difficulties in Italy. A testimony to new dimensions in the approach to design, new creative, entrepreneurial and community dynamics.

Retrospective exhibition of the work of Manuel Lapa (Lisbon, 1914-1979), painter and graphic designer who forged his own path among a golden generation of graphic designers who served the Politics of the Spirit of António Ferro and his National Department of Information.

An exhibition dedicated to the presence of design in the Portuguese ceramics industry, which sought to highlight the relationships between Portuguese ceramic production and the international scene, in the aftermath of the artistic avant-garde of the early 20th century, focusing on the inter-war period.  

Exhibition of the work of Thomaz de Mello, Tom, whose activity as an illustrator and designer developed from the 1920s until his death in 1990. The exhibition showcased original illustrations, publications, ethnographic figures, graphic and photographic material and other elements of Tom's work.

The main exhibition of Porto Design Biennale 21 revealed material practices and built an archive of living matter together with designers, local experts and citizens, seeking to encourage the construction of new practices and relationships for the future.

Starting with the monographs of the D Collection, dedicated to Portuguese designers and published by the National Press, the exhibition explored the potential of these books to function as an archive through which historical interpretations and critical readings of Portuguese design can be established.

A showcase of the design and technology, community and territory envisioned by Adriano Olivetti between the 1930s and 1960s in Ivrea, Italy. The iconic typewriters set the tone for a visionary landscape, at the forefront of global design and industry.
