Roberto Clemente's 1956 Contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates

Clemente received this contract and, unpleased with the salary of $7,000, sent it back to Branch Rickey unsigned with a letter requesting a $10,000 salary.

After receiving Clemente's unsigned contract and letter asking for $10,000 Branch Rickey writes back calling Clemente's request an "absurdity".

Before finally settling on a salary of $8,500 for Clemente, Branch Rickey sends one more letter calling out Roberto on his request. Branch mentions that Clemente is not as good as he believes he is and the $7,500 is more than enough.

Started by Al Abrams in 1936, the Dapper Dan Award was given to a Sportsman of the Year at a yearly banquet that helped bring in charitable contributions for the Boys and Girls club of Western Pennsylvania.

Painted in 2019 on the building adjacent to the Clemente Museum in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA by Kyle Holbrook. The mural was completed with the help of the Pittsburgh community, Pirates players and  members of the Clemente Family.
