What is Black in the Day?
Black in the Day is a submission based photo archive documenting the lives and experiences of Black people in the UK over the decades.
Why did it start?
It began when Founders (Tania Nwachukwu and Jojo Sonubi) had a conversation about the family photo albums and the importance of preserving personal family histories, as well as those of the extended communities.
“Me, siblings, uncle and grandmother in grandma’s garden” (1994)Black in the Day
Black in the day aim to create a space for those interested in the links between the past, present and future by collecting, preserving, and celebrating the stories of those who came before.
“Mum looking fresh faced”Black in the Day
Black in the Day started by doing a callout on social media for people to submit photos. A few trickled in. Then decided to host Scanning Socials where people could come and submit photos in person. The archive now has over a thousand images.
“Oyin’s 10th birthday party” (2002)Black in the Day
Black in the Day now do events, exhibitions and collaborations across the UK and New York. Most recently, they hosted their first exhibition ‘GLORY: A Celebration of Black British Athletes’ in collaboration with Getty Images and Nike.
“Great grandparents on their wedding day”Black in the Day
Black in the Day are working on growing the archive and finding different ways to engage people with the rich histories within it. They have also expanded the ways they share these stories to moving images. A series called 'Behind the Frames' is the start of this.
