Frevo clubs sprouted in the streets in the late 19th century, even with the elite and authorities trying to ban them. Rich parades known as Masquerades were created to replace frevo's "mess."

Spontaneous expressions, currently translated into Clubs of Frevo, Troces, Blocks and Clubs of Dolls, many of the associations were founded by workers of the center of Recife - sailors, prostitutes, stevedores and marginals – grounded people, who met for a moment of fun, following the bands through the streets. Therefore, it was common for the associations to be named after the professions of their founders.

From the 1860s, little by little, these groups reinvented their structures and choreographies, incorporating new elements: the capoeira character, who opened the cortege, became the dancers, and the military band became the metal orchestra.

From the original organizations remained the banners, insignia, symbols in the props and the format of processions. The clubs promoted the processions, each with its identification symbols stamped on banners. One of the oldest associations in Recife was the Carnival Club Misto Vassourinhas, created in 1889.

Besides the fun, the associations guarantee the valorization of the communities, bringing pride to its residents, creating job opportunities for local artisans and artists, promoting the reception and development of skills.
