This waistcoat is an important survival of the clothing of King George III. It was worn during the last days of the King's life when he suffered from illness. Collections Curator Polly Putnam gives insight into George III and the history of this garment in the following video.

Here is a detail of some of the staining on the front of the waistcoat. The stain may have been caused by food or by sickness.

The top button of the waistcoat features a long shank. This longer shank would have made it easier to dress the King.

On the back of the waistcoat, the panel of extra fabric between the sleeve and the waistcoat is evident. The additional fabric may have been another feature added to assist with dressing the King.
