The Great Green Wall isn’t just for the Sahel. It is a global symbol for humanity overcoming its biggest threat – our rapidly degrading environment. It shows that if we can work with nature, even in challenging places like the Sahel, we can overcome adversity.

Growing a green wall does much more than just restore degraded land. This extraordinary initiative fights poverty and hunger, builds resilience to climate change, improves health and well-being, creates jobs, boosts economic opportunities and the future for the next generation.

Gender and women's empowerment

Women are on the frontline of climate change and its impacts, yet tend to have limited access to resources and decision-making power. Women’s involvement in the Great Green Wall is fundamental to its success, as they are often central to land regeneration and food production.

By enabling women to take part in the decision-making processes and benefit economically from the Great Green Wall, it can ensure that the initiative is designed, implemented, and monitored in a way that is inclusive and  gender-sensitive.

Once complete, the Great Green Wall will be the largest living structure on the planet, 3 times the size of the Great Barrier Reef.
