This 11th Century chapel is almost all intact. It is one of the most complete examples of early Anglo-Norman ecclesiastical architecture in England.

The aisle, separated off by its twelve massive columns, the arcaded gallery above and the barrel-vaulted central space, make the chapel resemble the east end of a much larger church.

The chapel of St John’s originally adjoined the King’s own apartments and was intended for his daily use. The wide arch in the end wall may have once framed a throne where the king sat during services.
