The aisle, separated off by its twelve massive columns, the arcaded gallery above and the barrel-vaulted central space, make the chapel resemble the east end of a much larger church.

The chapel of St John’s originally adjoined the King’s own apartments and was intended for his daily use. The wide arch in the end wall may have once framed a throne where the king sat during services.

During the Middle Ages this chapel fell out of use and the Tower’s other chapel – St Peter ad Vincula – became a more regular place of worship for the Tower’s community.
