The Apple Trees in The Wizard of Oz

As Dorothy and the Scarecrow make their way along the Yellow Brick Road in The Wizard of Oz (1939), they come across an orchard of apple trees who aren't too happy when Dorothy picks an apple.

Rafiki's Baobab

Towering over the flat plains of the Sahara is the bottle-shaped trunk of the Baobab tree that Rafiki, the mystic monkey of Disney's The Lion King (1994), makes his home. In real life, some Baobabs are revered as religious and ritual sites.

Grandmother Willow

The kind, caring, and comedic Grandmother Willow in Disney's Pocahontas (1995) uses her elder's knowledge, connection to the forest, and whip-smart wit to guide the young Pocahontas, and her companions, through this pivotal part of their lives.

Fantastic Mr. Fox's House

Found between the farms of Walter Boggis, Nathaniel Bunce and Franklin Bean, the Fox family's arboreal house was memorably depicted in Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). In this cutaway scene, Anderson allows a peek inside the spacious, comfortable home.

Few plants on-screen have captured so many hearts as Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 (2007). This goofy, adorable little sapling gets into all kinds of scrapes. As voice actor Vin Diesel said, "he's just kinda learning as he goes".

Treebeard

In the dark depths of Fangorn Forest stand ancient creatures, older than anything in Middle Earth; Ents are Tree-Folk, and Treebeard is their leader. In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), Treebeard leads his army of Ents on one last march, to Isengard.

The Whomping Willow

Of all the creatures in the films of Harry Potter, few are more terrifying than the Whomping Willow. Its furious, flailing arms attack anything within reach and without mercy. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), it almost takes Harry and Hermione's lives.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

This lonely tree framed by rocky outcrops and an ancient stone wall may look like a movie prop, but it's real! This scene of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) was filmed at the Roman ruins of Hadrian's Wall, in northern England. In fact, the tree's still there to this day.

This point, almost exactly halfway along the length of Hadrian's Wall, is known as Sycamore Gap.

The Tree of Souls

In James Cameron's epic tale of space-faring colonialism, Avatar (2009), the Tree of Souls is said to be the closest point to the god Eywa on the planet of Pandora. The Na'vi consider it their most significant religious site, and have worshipped there for nearly 3000 years.

The Shawshank Tree

In the award-winning prison-break movie, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Andy Dufresne has Ellis 'Red' Redding promise to retrieve a box, buried under a certain tree, when he gets out. As it turns out, that tree marks the beginning a new chapter in both their lives.
