Pollution 2018 - RefleAction (2018) by Iris CeramicaMuseo Storico Iris Ceramica Group
Pollution, 45 years of sustainability
Right from the outset, the companies in the Iris Ceramica Group identified sustainability as the premise and horizon of their existence and their production. An investment in responsibility that has accompanied every action, project and construction from 1961 until today.
Economy=Ecology (1960) by Iris CeramicaMuseo Storico Iris Ceramica Group
This is the revolutionary message that, in the Sixties, was written above the production lines in Romano Minozzi’s factories. It is the expression of a strong will to work with sustainable thoughts and social responsibility, and has characterised the company’s entire history.
Pollution 1972, a new ecological aesthetics
With the industrial development of the 1970s, the word pollution began to be used, associated especially with the link between factory smoke and the local territory. In 1972, in Bologna, Iris Ceramica launched a provocation, with “Pollution - For a new aesthetics of pollution”: mutant nature was interpreted by installations and visionary artistic performances.
A clod of earth, the symbol of assumed responsibility
Piazza Santo Stefano is covered in ceramics with a graphic portraying a clod of earth. The square became the stage for the works of 25 artists, including Mario Ceroli, Ugo La Pietra, Armando Marrocco, Claudio Parmiggiani, Gianni Ruffi, the band UFO and Franco Battiato.

When sustainability becomes art
In that urban field, we can still hear the words of Franco Battiato: “You don’t have the strength to try to change your future because you are afraid of discovering the freedom you don’t want to have. Did you never wonder what function you have?”. Two months later his album Pollution was released, and the cover photo showed that same clod of earth portrayed on the ceramics.
The artists had the task of drawing the horizon of an ecological consciousness, telling of the “ways of managing mutant nature”.
The single-fired tile revolution
In 1978, the new Edilcarani plant was the most modern in the Group, producing single-fired tiles in an integral cycle, from “continuous” crushing of quartz, feldspars and noble clays to firing the high-tech mixtures at temperatures of 1200 °C.
Innovative waste recycling process (1988) by Iris CeramicaMuseo Storico Iris Ceramica Group
Iris Ceramica, pioneer of waste recycling
"Iris recovers waste glazes and sludge, and processes them to obtain a new product, recycling over 5 thousand tonnes of waste in its production plants every year, waste that is not thrown away or buried”.
La Repubblica, 1988
Another step in the research for minimising the environmental footprint generated by production processes. From the numbers of the ‘80s to today, the use of raw materials not at risk of exhaustion and the adoption of extraction plans for recovering quarries, closed-circuit production systems and the development of eco-active materials that can directly improve quality of life.

Environmental footprint and renewable energy
The Group has signed a contract with Alperia, provider of green energy produced in the hydroelectric power stations in South Tyrol, without any CO2 emissions, a commitment to use resources from renewable sources for its activities, focusing on eco-compatible production and helping to protect the environment, communities and territories.
Active Surfaces® 2021 (2020) by Iris CeramicaMuseo Storico Iris Ceramica Group
Active Surfaces®, a masterpiece of sustainability
Active Surfaces® technology combines design, science and creativity giving life to eco-active materials with antibacterial and antiviral (also anti Covid-19), anti-pollution, anti-odour and self-cleaning properties. In early 2021, the research conducted by Iris Ceramica Group in partnership with the Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Milan also confirmed the effectiveness of Active Surfaces® against Sars-Cov-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19.

Pollution 2018 - RefleAction (2018) by Iris CeramicaMuseo Storico Iris Ceramica Group
Pollution - RefleAction 2018
Pollution – RefleAction represents the bond between art and architecture, reflecting on the ties between humans and nature. 46 years after the artistic actions of 1972, the Group returns to Piazza S. Stefano in Bologna with Mario Cucinella’s School of Sustainability, transforming it into a wood with 40 oaks emerging from artificial soil. The star of the exhibition is the innovative Active Surfaces® technology.

An installation that bursts into the city landscape with the shape of a large mirror-finished blade reflecting the sky and the trees above it, becoming an opportunity for “reflection” on new humans, aware of being part of an ecosystem that they do not own.
Every day, Iris Ceramica Group works to create a world in which the local production systems and human habitats can live together to generate new levels of sustainable well-being.

The Architecture Biennale 2018
In 2018, Iris Ceramica Group was the sponsor of Arcipelago Italia, the pavilion curated by Mario Cucinella for the 16th Architecture Biennale. The project is devoted to the towns nestling in the Italian Apennines, with five specific areas of intervention that become symbols of the rebirth of the country’s inland territories.
In the Italy Pavilion, located in the Arsenale in Venice, Iris Ceramica Group materials bring life to a 10 metre-long backdrop made from large 300x100 cm technical ceramics, customised using the innovative technology DYS - Design Your Slabs, reproducing a drawing done by hand by the architect Mario Cucinella, curator of the installation.
