The Racket (1938) by María IzquierdoColección Blaisten

The Mexican painter María Izquierdo created this work titled 'The Racket' in 1938.

Zooming into the work, you can see the dilapidated walls up close, showing the abandonment of the building...

...and the sunken window opening onto a dark and stormy scene.

The painting also shows various objects arranged on a table.

Next to the piano is an empty candlestick...

...while the other objects refer to modern games and entertainment.

This includes tennis rackets and balls...

...cigarettes...

...a pair of elegant white gloves...

...a carnival mask...

...and a clothes brush.

Some elements of the objects are strangely animated: the thumb and forefinger of the foreground glove are folded to hold the cigarette...

...and the dark pink of the mask appears to have blushed cheeks.
