Somerset House Studios | Nocturnal City, 2017/2018

Nocturnal City examined the state of nightlife and its influence. By connecting discussions in London with other world cities including Berlin, Barcelona and Manchester, through installations, panel talks and performances, the series explored how urban hubs and communities can learn from each other to create new cultural standards.

What is the state of London night club culture and what are the views on the near future?

Curated by Studio resident Estela Oliva in collaboration with Somerset House Studios, the first edition of Nocturnal City interrogated the interplay between London and Berlin nightlife. The evening of installations, panel talks and performances featured DJs, artists and professionals from both cities, including London Night Czar Amy Lamé, Lutz Leichsenring (Clubcommission Berlin), Berlin Community Radio, Bala Club, musicians Laurel Halo and Beatrice Dillon and artists Lawrence Lek and LaTurbo Avedon.

How can new structures and DIY scenes support and preserve artistic creation?

The second event in the series explored the interplay between London and Barcelona featured Hyperdub's Ikonika, visual artist Mungo, DJ collective SIREN, Marija Bozinovska Jones, Aleix Fernandez of Onionlab, and Barcelona's Sunny Graves feature in the latest edition of Nocturnal City. Cotch International and Resis'dance explore how new spaces contribute to making club culture more accessible and inclusive from Peckham's community record store, Rye Wax.

Nocturnal City: London - Manchester was curated by Studios resident Estela Oliva with a special collaboration from Nik Void (Factory Floor, Carter Tutti Void).

Like London, Manchester has an influential past in the club scene and a fast-evolving new scene. But how can the two cities learn from each other to ensure alternative scenes continue to flourish outside the mainstream?
